Career Progress Opportunities
Having achieved your ambition to become a PSNI Constable inevitably you will be keen to have a long and progressive career.
Promotion Opportunities
The PSNI has many and varied career paths and there may be opportunities for you to gain promotion if you wish.
The PSNI operates an equal opportunities policy with regard to promotion opportunities.
You will benefit from personal development and training throughout your career with PSNI and if you are a determined, hard-working individual who displays a particular flair for your work you will be able to get ahead in the organisation.
As a new recruit the following promotion mechanisms will be most relevant to you:
Possible Career Goals
As a new recruit your first priority will be to successfully complete your training and probation period. After that the sky is the limit!
To give you a flavour of what you could achieve, below you will findprofiles of the three ranks immediately above your starting rank of Constable: Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector.
|
Sergeant |
On completion of your two year probation, you are eligible to apply for promotion to Sergeant. As a sergeant you may be responsible for the supervision of a team of officers and report to an Inspector. At this level you are expected to make decisions and be accountable for them. |
|
Inspector |
The role is diverse, bringing you into middle management, and requires strong leadership and interpersonal skills for dealing with both internal and community concerns. In addition to managing your sector, the role requires you to be able to handle a wide range of issues, including working with the community and with other organisations to solve policing problems. You will be expected to meet with local councils and community groups to resolve local community issues, and to further enhance the working relationship between the community and the PSNI. As Inspector, you will need to develop the capacity to make sound judgements, taking a helicopter view of the situation and analysing the whole picture. |
|
Chief Inspector |
At this level, the challenges and responsibility increase and you will be dealing with many complex policing issues. You are likely to have operational responsibility for managing a number of sectors, and will have to look at wider issues and take command of larger events. As Chief Inspector, you will be responsible for liaising with community groups and developing a local community forum designed to promote better understanding of, and insight into community policing. This is an increasingly important element of the Chief Inspector's role, further improving relations between the community and the PSNI. The role is challenging and demanding and your development continues to allow you to be well placed for promotion to Superintendent and beyond. |
How far you progress in the PSNI will be influenced by your drive, determination and willingness to develop. Clearly your career in the PSNI will be tough and rewarding. The very fact you are considering the personal sacrifices you will have to make to serve the community suggests that you are the type of person with the potential to succeed.
Alternative Career Mobility Opportunities
Alongside the potential for promotion there may be other opportunities open to you while you are in the PSNI which will broaden your experience and allow for you to move within different departments, to new roles and even to other organisations. Such mobility could be achievable through one of the following mechanisms:
