Transfer and Specialist Opportunities
Everyone who joins the PSNI through the current recruitment campaign managed by Deloitte will join as a Trainee Police Constable and will work their probation period carrying out beat and patrol functions.
During your time as a PSNI officer, however, you may have the opportunity to apply for transfer and specialist role opportunities. Such opportunities will allow you to broaden your experience and add variety to your career.
You will have to complete your probation period as a Constable and complete time within a DCU before you become eligible to apply for such opportunities. However as your time with the PSNI progresses more such opportunities may open up to you.
Internal vacancies such as transfer and specialist role opportunities are advertised through the PSNI's Intranet usually on a bi-monthly basis. Providing you are eligible to apply and meet the requirements advertised you may apply for such transfer and specialist roles. Each transfer and specialist post will specify a minimum period of commitment, which requires you to remain in the post / department for the period of time specified.
Transfer to the PSNI
If you are a serving officer with another police force and are considering joining the PSNI please note that
there is no transfer process at the rank of Constable. There is no transfer process available at the rank of Constable as a result of the current legislation governing recruitment to the PSNI (i.e. the 50:50 recruitment arrangements advised by the Patten Commission, see here for details).
Serving officers from other forces can and do apply to join the PSNI through the external recruitment process (managed by Deloitte) which is open to the general public. If you do apply in this manner you would complete all stages of the recruitment process like all other applicants. If you are successful and recruited to the PSNI training may be condensed based on your previous policing experience. Also your previous service is normally carried forward from the previous force.
If you need further information please contact the PSNI HR Department directly via the PSNI website, otherwise apply by completing the application form when recruitment is open.
