As a Trainee Police Constable, what would I actually be doing?

As you consider joining the PSNI as a Trainee Police Constable you will have many questions, not least-what will I actually be doing in my new role?

There is clearly a wide range of jobs available within the Police Service of Northern Ireland. However, all police officers start on a two year probation, as a Beat and Patrol Constable.

During this time you will be based in an operational station, carrying out the standard duties of a Beat and Patrol Constable. These duties may vary slightly between urban and rural areas, but the aim is to focus resources on the needs of the community. The overall aim of police constables is to protect life and property, prevent and detect crime, and preserve the peace. Please see below the Role Profile of a Police Constable Patrol / Probationer:

To patrol the area for which responsible, to prevent crime and disorder, maintain safe road conditions and to respond to calls from the public.

Conduct Patrol

Contribute to maintaining road safety

Drive police vehicles safely *

Police Operations:

Participate in operations

Provide an initial response to incidents

Investigation:

Conduct initial investigations

Interview suspects

Interview victims and witnesses

Investigate allocated enquiries

Search person(s) or personal property

Search premises, vehicles and land

Manage initial scene preservation

Investigate traffic collisions

Custody and Prosecution:

Complete prosecution procedures

Conduct arrest/process procedures

Conduct custody reception procedures (arresting officer)

Prepare and present case files

Present evidence in court and at other hearings

Personal Responsibility:

Complete administration procedures

Comply with Health and Safety legislation

Maintain standards of professional practice

Make best use of technology

*There is an opportunity to train to drive police vehicles, however not all policing roles will require officers to drive police vehicles.
