  • The Police Service of Northern Ireland operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and therefore requires police officers to work shifts.
  • The Police Service of Northern Ireland operates 24/7/365, therefore police officers may be required to work overtime at a short period of notice.
  • The operational requirements also mean that police officers may be needed to work during seasonal holiday periods and bank holidays.
  • Police officers are expected to wear a uniform at all times whilst on duty in order to present an appropriate image to the public.
  • Police officers are required to carry out full training, a period of which will be residential.
  • Police officers have an obligation to maintain their knowledge, skills and competencies, so need to undertake frequent training.
  • Police officers may be required to use trained dogs as a part of crime investigation and evidence gathering activities.
  • In Northern Ireland, police officers are required to be trained to use and to carry a firearm whilst on duty.
  • In addition to the six months spent training at the Police College, employment within the Police Service will be considered probationary for a period of two years.
  • The Police Service operates throughout Northern Ireland and therefore requires police officers to work at different locations.
  • The Police Service requires Student and Probationer Officers to meet the required standards of Physical Fitness.
  • The Police Service requires Students and Probationer Officers to act professionally both on and off duty at all times. It is expected that you maintain the highest standards of integrity at all times and throughout your service.
